The Never Ending Story
There are some who say they will let the spirit of the steel tell them what it wants to
be. This is a good way to start but with practice and learning how to manipulate steel it is
not the only way. . It should be the other way around. You make the steel do what you want it
to be. This is by no means a put-down or ment to be demeaning to anyone who is not there yet.
We all started here. I was there. After many trial and error and many scrap pieces eventually
you get to the point where you know how to manipulate the steel. You have an idea of what you
want. We don't always get there. Sometimes we modify. We learn to fix our mistakes. All of this
is in the journey to becoming a master bladesmith. I am by no means a master. I have the
attitude that I'm always, always learning. Is my way the right way? Maybe for me but it's
probably not the only way. There are many ways to get to what you want. Learn your tools learn
your steel. Practice. Practice. Practice. The learning is in the doing. A true master knows that
his way is not the only way and is open to other ways. They also know the fundimentals and know
what works. Enjoy the journey.
